A study has found that only 143 students caught cheating were expelled out of 9,200 cases, despite almost all British universities threatening expulsion as a sanction. The study of 86 UK universities also found a much higher rate of plagiarism among postgraduate students.

The British Library has announced that it is making 1,500 journals available for immediate download at http://direct.bl.uk. A huge variety of titles will be added on June 1, 2008, ranging from science, medicine and technology through to politics, history, anthropology and literature. The move is in response to customers’ growing need for instant digital access to research material.

The British Library’s ongoing projects to make thousands of books and other resources available digitally won’t slow down significantly, despite the ending last week of a partnership with Microsoft, a senior library official said recently. Microsoft formed a partnership with the library in November 2005 to fund the scanning of up to 100,000 out-of-copyright 19th century books, or around 20 million pages. The scanning work will continue for a while longer until the last 40,000 books are finished, said Neil Fitzgerald, digitization project manager.

Close to half of all people in the UK will be members of a social networking site within four years, a new report indicates. The study found that the UK has the highest number of users in Europe who are members of sites such as MySpace and Facebook. At least 9.6 million people in the UK use these sites and that is expected to increase to 27.1 million by 2012. The report by Datamonitor, an independent market analyst, predicts that the UK will see healthy growth in numbers in Europe over the next five years. The growth is not only being driven by the young, but increasingly, older people are showing interest in social networking.
