“Presence at the Media is Necessary to Innovate”

When David Nordfors was leaving for Standford (California) from Sweden, he decided to surf the Internet to visit the university’s web. There were only three computers at his town’s library from where he could surf the Internet, one of them for adults and the other two for children. He could not use either of them. At that time, the Internet was the future; now, it is the present. David Nordfors is Senior Research Scholar at Standford’s University’s Center for Innovations in Learning. In 2003, he founded the concept of “Innovation Journalism” and now, he leads the Innovation Journalism Fellowship Program at Standford, the university from where Silicon valley employs most people.

Last year, most people said it wouldn’t happen. Now it is happening out of desperation. The people who social media participants and bloggers call “old media” are working as quickly as possible to change everything and become the, um, new new media. Old media is not struggling; they are fighting for survival. According to Bloomberg, Business Week is doing everything possible to keep up. The magazine is undergoing a facelift and adding stories on new products and personal finance. It is updating its logo and typefaces.

Generation Y Multitaskers Boost Media Time

Multitasking is driving up the total amount of time that US teens spend with media, according to a Bridge Ratings study conducted in March to May 2007. US consumers ages 13 to 17 spend more time with media overall than other age groups do, and their total media time has grown by more than two and a half hours per day since May 2004. Bridge attributes this change to Generation Y’s skill at consuming two or more of types of media simultaneously.
