One of the fastest growing trends today is combining data and functionality from several sources to create new services that provide a unique user experience. They’re called mash ups. Think Google Maps. Yahoo Pipes. Facebook Plug-Ins. Libraries are doing Web mash ups as well: Meebo Instant Messaging. Library Lookup. Bookburro. And, in a way, they’ve been doing all kinds of mash ups for years. Think story hour, open-shelf access, cafes, book lockers.

Following up on the official launch of MySpace Mobile two weeks ago, the top social network has just announced the expansion of its text message alert program to five new carriers through a partnership with mBlox. CUstomers of Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile USA, Alltel Wireless, US Cellular, and Virgin Mobile USA can now receive notifications of new messages, friend requests, profile comments, and other MySpace activities via SMS message. Previously, major carriers supporting the service included AT&T, Sprint, and Helio. Overall, MySpace and mBlox claim that more than 90% of the social network’s users can now access the service.

The Web, for all its usefulness, is still a fairly unorganized collection of information. For years, programmers have been connecting disparate bits of information by making “mashups,” websites that combine information from two or more sources, such as Google maps and Craigslist rental listings. But mashup making has remained the domain of geeks who know how to program, or at least highly motivated novices who want to learn. A new research project from Intel Research, in Berkeley, CA, is trying to take some of the mystery out of crafting a mashup. Called Mash Maker, the project aims to let people use their ordinary Web browsers to combine information from different sites.
