USA Book News has announced the winners of its National “Best Books 2008” Awards. The online magazine selected more than 500 print and audiobook winners and finalists in some 140 categories, all published in 2008 or late 2007. Selections include titles from major publishers as well as independents and university presses.

More than 8,000 teen readers across the country chose Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer as their favorite book in the annual Teens’ Top Ten vote, sponsored by YALSA. The online vote took place during Teen Read Week, October 12–18, with the third entry in Meyer’s popular vampire romance series winning easily over J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Dr. Peter Hernon, professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Simmons College, is the 2008 Association of College and Research Libraries’ (ACRL) Academic/Research Librarian of the Year. The award, sponsored by YBP Library Services, recognizes an outstanding member of the library profession who has made a significant national or international contribution to academic/research librarianship and library development. “Dr. Peter Hernon was selected because of his substantive body of research over a career of more than 30 years. His research, publications and presentations significantly impact the library profession,” said award committee Chair Cynthia Steinhoff, library director at the Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Md. “He informs us and helps us to face the challenges that lie ahead. He helps us to determine the role of libraries and librarians in the future. Dr. Hernon’s work, which focuses on such varied topics as assessment, government information, service quality and leadership, addresses very real issues and questions that academic librarians face every day.”

The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) announced the winners of the first Sparky Awards January 22. The contest called on entrants to imaginatively illustrate in a short video the value of sharing ideas and information of all kinds. In first place was Share (0:53), written and directed by Habib Yazdi, a senior communication studies major at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature was awarded on Monday to “Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices From a Medieval Village,” by Laura Amy Schlitz. The American Library Association announced the prize at its midwinter meeting in Philadelphia. The book, a series of monologues and dialogues about characters in the Middle Ages, is illustrated by Robert Byrd and published by Candlewick Press. Its format is different from the more traditional novels that have characterized past Newbery winners.

Applications are available for “Batting for literacy @ your library,” a new award in conjunction with the Step Up to the Plate @ your library program. The award will honor an individual librarian who has used baseball to enhance literacy or library service. The recipient will be awarded a trip to the 2008 Baseball Hall of Fame Game, an annual exhibition game between two major league teams at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y. The trip will include a behind-the-scenes tour of the library and museum.
